Integration of Science & Management

With the Natural Resource Challenge, the National Park Service made a commitment to improving its stewardship of park natural resources through the expansion of science-based learning and management (Natural Resources Challenge Action Plan, 1999). To be successful, it is necessary to take actions that will result in improving the integration of science, resource monitoring, and natural resource management. These actions include: 1) Explicitly linking NPS science programs and management in their objectives and processes; 2) Identifying the institutions and approaches for linking these elements based on critical needs; 3) Expanding or creating new partnership between park managers and scientists; and 4) Providing a framework for adaptively learning and applying new information and knowledge.
