Project Type:  Restoration
Project Status:  Ongoing

Fire management activities in Yellowstone are carried out in conformance with Minimum Impact Suppression Tactics (MIST) guidelines to minimize their effect on the park’s natural and cultural resources. Although plant communities that have been burned are generally allowed to recover on their own, areas that have been significantly altered by fire suppression activities (e.g., firelines, use of fire retardant and aerial water buckets, firefighter camp sites, staging areas, and helispots) are rehabilitated as soon as possible, sometimes starting before the fire is declared out.
