Habituated Wolves

Project Type:  Management Action
Project Status:  Ongoing

Attacks on humans by healthy wild wolves are extremely rare. Most documented attacks have involved wolves that were rabid, had become habituated to humans, were provoked into attack by being cornered or trapped, or were in environments greatly altered by humans (McNay 2002). In Yellowstone, where no wolf attack on a human is known to have occurred, efforts are made to prevent the wolves from becoming habituated to the proximity of people and a policy has been developed for managing habituated wolves when necessary.
