Resource Selection and Population Dynamics of Shira's Moose in Northwest Wyoming
Project Status: 2006
In January 2005, the Wyoming Game and Fish Department and the University of Wyoming initiated a study of Jackson Hole moose. The study builds on previous research and aims to investigate resource selection, seasonal distribution, and movement patterns of female moose, and to assess potential causes of recent population declines. Preliminary results indicated Jackson moose are in good physical condition and rates for pregnancy, parturition, neonate survival, calf recruitment (from 2005 calves), and adult survival (biological year 2005 ending May 31, 2006) appeared within normal ranges reported for other North American populations. Researchers are also evaluating habitat conditions which may have changed in recent decades.
