Wild Horse & Burro Population Dynamics

Project Type:  Monitoring, Inventory
Project Status:  Ongoing

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and Bureau of Land Management are conducting research on wild horse populations, including the Pryor Mountain horses. This study provides essential data related primarily to fertility control, including Porcine Zona Pellucida (PZP) treatment methods, genetic conservation, and population estimation. Foal and demographic data are also collected. Fertility control field trials are conducted on three wild horse populations, including the Pryor Mountain horses. The Pryor Mountain horses are also a test case for population estimation methods including aerial population estimation research, since the population is accurately known from intense ground observation
