Public Education and Bear-Proofing
Project Type: Outreach
Project Status: Ongoing
Project Status: Ongoing
Because the long-term survival of bears in the GYE depends on the public’s understanding the ways of bears, park staff present bear-related talks, field trips, and slide shows to park visitors and community groups. Park staff also monitor and maintain campsite food storage poles and boxes for use at backcountry and frontcountry campsites, and other bear-proof containers such as garbage cans and dumpsters to ensure their effectiveness. Bear safety and public education and outreach programs presented by Bear Management Office personnel in 2008 are listed under the Project Report tab at right.
