Phase II: Cougar-Wolf Interactions in YNP

Project Type:  Monitoring
Project Status:  Completed

The goal of the study was to quantify the ecological relations between the obligate large carnivores in the Northern Yellowstone Ecosystem in order to achieve effective conservation and management of the full suite of native, large North American carnivores. Integrated multispecies research is a critical component of advancing large carnivore conservation reserve and landscape linkage design beyond the single species approach to one of an ecosystem approach. With the reintroduction of wolves to YNP, the Northern Yellowstone area provided a perfect laboratory in which to assess the effects of large carnivores on each other and their prey. The data is being analyzed, and a book summarizing the entire projected is expected in 2010.
