Stone Circle Site Documentation

Project Type:  Inventory
Project Status:  Ongoing

Stone circle documentation is being conducted by the Northwest College and Indiana University Archaeological Field School to document previously identified but unrecorded stone circle sites. Analysis of stone circles can provide information on social and economic organization, daily activities, and social and symbolic traditions of prehistoric people. A combination of analytical techniques is used to establish stone circle domestic site and feature chronologies. Sites are mapped in detail using geographic information systems (GIS), geophysically surveyed for remote sensing of subsurface features and archaeological deposits, and finally undergo limited test excavations.
