Site Assessments & Reassessments

Prior to 2003, 143 prehistoric sites were documented in Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area (NRA). Since then, over 3,000 acres have been surveyed and over 2,000 sites are estimated to be in the park. Surveys include reassessments of sites initially surveyed in the 1960s and 1970s. The collection backlog of these sites has been inventoried, cataloged, and curated. The Pretty Creek Collection, which consists of over 240,000 artifacts, is the only complete collection in the park and is now available and accessible for research.
